300 Riders, Including Mike King, Set for Napier to Wellington 50cc Scooter Challenge for Charity

The Jolly Good Chaps Napier to Wellington 50cc Scooter Challenge returns in 2025 with its biggest turnout yet, as 300 riders prepare to take on the journey in support of youth mental health and men facing business and life challenges. Among them will be mental health advocate Mike King, who is joining the ride to help raise awareness and funds for I Am Hope NZ, Awhi Trust, Hawkes Bay charities, and not-for-profit organisations.

Since its inception, the event has raised more than $400,000, in total since inception in 2021, with participants not only committing to the long haul on 50cc scooters but also individually fundraising to contribute to the cause. The ride, now a highlight on the charity calendar, continues to grow each year, drawing a diverse group of riders from across the country.

Mike King says he’s looking forward to the challenge and is inspired by the community effort behind it. “This event is an incredible example of Kiwis coming together for a cause that really matters. Every dollar raised goes toward men’s mental health and giving young people access to the help they need, and every rider on this journey is making a real difference. It’s an honour to be a part of it.”

Co-founder Paul Garland says the event is about more than just fundraising—it’s about connection, resilience, and having a bit of fun along the way. “We’ve seen so many riders return year after year, not just because it’s a ridiculous amount of fun, but because they genuinely want to make a difference. Some of them have been personally affected by the causes we support, and for them, this ride means something more.”

The trip from Napier to Wellington takes between seven and ten hours, with stops along the way to refuel and recharge. From first-time participants to returning riders, the event is known for its mix of camaraderie, creativity, and endurance—all in the name of supporting others.
