Hamilton musician Dayne Lennon is bringing four bands together for Seasonal Disorder, a live music fundraiser supporting I Am Hope.
The event will take place at Biddy Mulligans in Hamilton on Saturday 25 July, with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets are $10 at the door, with raffles, prizes and a Givealittle page also helping raise funds for I Am Hope.
Seasonal Disorder will feature Exotic Minds, Dolphin Drive, Tria and Mondo Green, with Biddy Mulligans providing the venue free of charge to help keep the event accessible.
For Lennon, frontman of Exotic Minds, the cause is personal.
“Gumboot Friday helped me out immensely a couple of years ago, finding help and funding counselling sessions for me. It helped me find a therapist who really clicked with me,” says Lennon.
“It means a lot to be able to give back. It’s okay to ask for help, whether that means talking to your friends or finding professional help when things are hard.”
Lennon says Seasonal Disorder was created to raise money, but also to keep the conversation around mental health going in a way that feels real and approachable.
“We’re putting this on to spread some love and music through the middle of winter, and to remind people they’re not alone,” he says.
I Am Hope founder Mike King says Dayne’s fundraiser is exactly the kind of community action that makes a difference.
“We are incredibly grateful. Dayne knows what it feels like to need help, and now he’s using his music to make sure others else can get it too,” says King.
“This is what I love about our communities. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Four bands, a $10 door charge, a few raffles, a venue that says ‘we’ll help’, and suddenly you’ve got people standing behind young New Zealanders who need someone to talk to.
“To Dayne, Exotic Minds, Dolphin Drive, Tria, Mondo Green, Biddy Mulligans and everyone who turns up on the night — thank you. We just had our biggest month of counselling services used in May. You’re helping make it easier for a young person to sit down with a counsellor and say what’s really going on.”
Gumboot Friday provides free counselling for young people aged 25 and under, with no referral required. Young people can choose a counsellor from Gumboot Friday’s registered network and book directly through the platform.
