Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson has done something truly special for Aotearoa. His first-ever car, a fully customised 2000 Subaru Forester, has sold on TradeMe for a massive $35,300 to support I Am Hope.
The winning bidder, Subaru enthusiast Murray, snapped up the one-of-a-kind build after a flurry of last-minute bids pushed the price well beyond expectations.
Lawson says the result blew him away.
“I’m very grateful to Murray and all the bidders who chose to push the final bid much higher than my expectation. I loved building this car, and although I won’t get to drive it again, I know Murray will have a grin when he gets behind the wheel.”

Built by a Kiwi Car Guy
Originally picked up by Liam and close friend Matt with 234,000 km on the clock, the Forester became a full-blown project build. Over more than a year, the pair transformed it into a tough, clean, capable showpiece, supported by a lineup of generous local sponsors who donated parts, expertise and time to make the car something special.
Liam chose the Forester for its place in Kiwi car culture. It is a fan favourite among young enthusiasts, many of whom face tough battles with mental health.
“We wanted to really push the project and make the car as cool as we can, then auction it for I Am Hope. A lot of people have a connection to the charity, myself included.”
A Win for Youth Mental Health
The money raised from the auction will help young people access free mental health support through Gumboot Friday.

This Forester is more than a cool build. It is a piece of Liam Lawson’s early story, built with mates, finished with sponsors and now heading to a new home where it will be driven, enjoyed and remembered.
To Liam, Matt, Murray and every sponsor who got behind this project — thank you.
Your generosity helps change lives.
A car with a whole lot of heart, indeed.
