What Government Funding Really Means And Why We Still Need You

Who Are We?

I Am Hope is the charity founded to give young people a fighting chance. Gumboot Friday is our free counselling service — no red tape, no judgement, just help when it’s needed. And that’s just one part of the mahi we do to support rangatahi across Aotearoa.

Did the Government Step Up?

Yes — and we’re genuinely grateful. They’ve committed $24 million over four years (up to $500,000 per month) to fund free counselling for young people. It’s a lifeline for thousands of kids.

What It Does Cover

The reimbursement of the invoices we receive and process from over 500 qualified and accredited counsellors.

What It Doesn’t Cover

This is where your support makes all the difference:
• School programmes like Little People, BigFeelings
• Community visits, events, or ambassador kōrero
• The secure tech that connects rangatahi to help
• The team behind the scenes
• Day-to-day operations

The Confusion

We don’t have $24 million sitting in the bank. We pay the invoice of every counsellor upfront, then invoice the Government. We spend first — then claim it back.

What Your Donations Do

Your donations keep the lights on, the doors open, and the hope alive. Because of your support, we can:
• Visit schools and help kids understand their emotions
• Reach isolated communities
• Run events that spark life-saving conversations
• Keep our counselling platform safe and accessible
• Step in before the crisis hits

It Takes Two - Hope Doesn’t Run on Empty

Government funding gets young people in the door. Your donations keep everything else running. One without the other? It falls over. Together, we save lives:

• 125,000+ counselling sessions funded
• Hundreds of schools visited
• Thousands of young lives supported

Let’s keep going. Let’s keep building. Let’s keep showing up. Because no kid should have to fall before someone catches them.
